It's hard to believe I'm finally here in Tokyo, 9 whole months after applying. It's been like that bit in Monty Pyton and the Holy Grail where the knights are miles away, and they're miles away, and they're miles away, and then they're right here.
We get 3 days in Tokyo and we're told it's all very formal, 3 days of wearing suits and intensive seminars. Bollocks, there are a couple of things where you have to dress up nice, but mostly it's holiday clothes because it's so damned hot. One of the funniest moments was when we were sitting there all in our suits and suddenly this huge south African bloke stands up, looking like he's going to kill someone - I notice that his back is all covered with what I thought was water but turned out to be the projectile vomit of the guy sitting behind him who'd overdone it a bit the night before lol :) The seminars aren't intensive either, it's mostly the same old story told again and again - don't sit in your apartment, don't be late for school and mostly have fun and talk to people. There were some good things though, namely the 5* hotel (I managed to push all the wrong buttons and spray water everywhere while it played me weird sounds of the rainforest), the seminar on pop culture (Japan seems to be the home of boybands) and being in the heart of Shinjuku.
They even brought in some test-subject-guinea-pigs-real-Japanese-school-girls for us to talk to and photograph.
The Okinawa lot got taken out to a cool all-you-can-eat-all-you-can-drink-place to, well, eat as much as we could and drink as much as we could. It was called Heaven And Hell and was like an underground cave with lots of big cages. The toilets were the best bit, this sumo toilet that moved towards you when you sat down with its big puckered lips.
Then after the free drink ran out, obviously we had to go to karaoke. Unlike UK karaoke where you have to do it in front of everyone, you get to book a room in a more civilised style in Tokyo. Bohemian Rhapsody was of course a classic and featured the essential air guitar.
Around day 2 we heard there was a big typhoon coming, and apparently there had been a 5.5 earthquake in Tokyo the day before we'd arrived. I was quite excited about the typhoon but it turned out to be just a load of wind and rain, nothing I hadn't seen too much of already in dat London. Made for some cool Bladerunner pics though.
Disappointingly it all fizzled out too soon and then we were shipped out in efficient Japanese style to our final prefectures. |
