| JET Adventures 20 - Snakes, geeks and football |

This weekend was a long weekend because today (Monday) is a public holiday called "Respect the Aged" day where we all go out and do good deeds for our elders and betters. The JETs who live on the remote islands (Okinawa is a remote island but it has millions of even smaller islands around it - one of my friends can bicycle across his island from one side to the other in under 10 minutes) came over and we celebrated by drinking this ridiculous alcohol called Habushu, as you can see it has a big dead snake in it. Habu is a species of snake in Okinawa that can turn its head 360 degrees and kill a man with one bite. The theory behind Habushu is that the venom is s'posed to mix with the alcohol to give you extra energy, kind of like Red Bull and vodka times 10, I guess. I'm not sure what happened to the snakes after we finished the two bottles but it was certainly a good party.
Saturday night was g33k night and I was amazed at how many closet geeks turned up to play magic the gathering, oldskool Nintendo, and emulators galore. It was insanely geeky though - the guy organising it had laminated his Magic cards and spent years perfecting his decks using statistical analysis. The Nintendo was good though, much Contra, Megaman and Mario Kart. There was one guy there who was a real bad loser who also happened to be atrociously bad at everything he tried his hand at. He'd throw down the controller, stomp around, sulk in the corner and generally behave badly so we ended up tormenting him in a classic case of When Geeks Turn Bad.
What with it being Liverpool vs Man Utd on Sunday, and a civilised kick-off of 8pm Okinawa time, me and Amul (resident scouser and DJ) decided to go to a Barcelona themed bar to hurl insults at each other under the guise of football. There was police tape dividing the bar for home and away supporters but Amul was the only Liverpool fan, up against a sea of reds. Admitedly there was only one true Manc in the place but I had fun teaching the Japanese guys football songs and debating Ronaldo's new haircut with the girls. |
