| JET Adventures 32 - Bonenkai |

One of the teachers at my school made her students make me Christmas cards because she was worried I was homesick for Christmas at home. Course she didn't tell me, but after the 10th student appeared at my desk clutching a homemade work of art, the light dawned. That middle one has a sticker of a camel on it. I'm praying fervently that the teacher hasn't discovered the Alice The Camel Has 5 Humps song and is teaching it to her students as another means to make me feel more at home.
How could I possibly be homesick when there's the school's bonenkai party to look forward to, anyway? Bonenkai means forget-year-party and it would be foolish to think that it would just be a nice izakaya somewhere and a few drinks. At my school, it means every department has to come up with some form of "entertainment" for the party. Last year the English department won for some kind of silhouette puppet thing, so there was pressure on us to retain our crown. One teacher wrote a play for us to perform and we rehearsed after school all this week. It was all in Japanese so I didn't really understand what was going on, but after someone explained it all to me, it became clear:
See, there's this big peach and a grandad and a grandma smash it open with a stick and in the peach is two old women who are famous for singing the theme tune to Mothra out of Godzilla. But they have to go back to the moon, so the principal of the school is also born from the peach. Then Frankenstein turns up and is killed by some people who are playing football with volleyballs. They kill him by volleyballing him to death while the Emporer's Death March from Star Wars is playing. Then everyone cheers and we all do this dance to "I want to live in America" from West Side Story.
Unfortunately we only came second - first prize went to the sports department who made a film in three parts: some kind of 'magic water', one of the teachers having an accident involving a skipping rope, and an investigation into whether the basketball coach was really a man. It was all a bit Tarantino.
The Japanese teachers did some crazy dancing:

This was me before our amazing performance, trying to lose my dignity by drinking as much as possible:
