We had yet another long weekend last weekend because Okinawa celebrates the Autumn Equinox and gives everyone the day off. No one knows why, I've asked. A bunch of us decided to go to Izena island because it's the most difficult one to get to and we all like a challenge, so we got on a bus for the 3 hour journey to Nago. Nago is at the other end of the island to where all the civilised people live but Okinawa is only 60 miles long (and 2-10 miles wide). The bus still took 3 hours though because everyone drives like they're 90 years old, admiring the scenery. No one knows why, I've asked. Then from Nago we got on the ferry to Izena, which is a tiny tropical paradise, littered with rock tombs which may or may not have been a contributing factor to the awful smell that was everywhere.
We all hired bikes and looked like some kind of circus troupe doing the Tour de France. A whole load of famous Taiko drummers turned out in force to give us a big party on the beach, cooking us a BBQ and performing and letting us hit their big drums.
We had a fire and burnt all our chopsticks to celebrate. No boyscouts amoung us though so it wasn't a very good fire.
The next day we found a big slide that had to be done. The look of anguish on my face here is not because I'm scared of children's playgrounds but because the metal had heated up to a bazillion degrees. It burned! It burned!
