| JET Adventures 60 - Tug Of War |

I started to regret missing out on the big tug of war at the Naha festival the other week because it would have provided vital training for Friday's "school picnic". The school packed 27 bus loads of us off to various beaches around Okinawa to chill out, have a barbeque lunch, and dislocate our collective limbs in the epic tug-of-war tournament.
None of the other teachers had to get dragged face down through the sand, but they made me do it. Those kids are strong, desho! Anyway, the barbeque made me forget about the sand-burn scars for a bit.
The best bit about the barbeque is that the students do all the work - fetch the barbeque, cook all the food, serve it up to you, and then clean everything and throw the rubbish away. The key is to pick the class who can cook without giving you food poisoning.
Then we went paddling in the sea until the lifeguard started shouting at us through her big red megaphone. How rubbish is that? Take the kids to the beach but don't let them anywhere near the water?
I was paying for my heroic tug-of-war efforts yesterday, but it didn't stop me going to my friend Ben's birthday party up north. Ben's pretty lucky to live where he does (about a 3 hour drive away from me), because the north of the island is the most beautiful (albeit the most "local"). He lives surrounded by beautiful mountains, forests, and beaches - not a combini in sight for miles (praise the lord for vending machines!). His girlfriend JingJing was his main birthday present - she'd come to live with him from Shanghai, after 15 months of being apart. This is a good thing because the last time I went up to visit Ben he had maggots crawling up his kitchen walls (because Ben "likes animals"), but this time round the place was maggot-free - I can only assume JingJing doesn't like animals as much, or that she mixed them all into the birthday cake she made. |
