Japanese TV is largely incomprehensible. It doesn't matter what time of the day or night you turn on the telly, it's always akin to daytime TV: people wearing lurid clothes sitting on sofas shouting at each other, cooking shows, game shows, or appallingly acted soap operas invariably set in offices or schools. And for some reason, everything has bright red Japanese subtitles in an offensively spiky font. Sunday nights there's a movie; my TV doesn't have the magic button that somehow turns off the dubbing and lets you hear it in English - but sometimes it's fun to hear what Robert Redford would sound like if he was Japanese. The best thing is SMAPxSMAP on Monday nights. SMAP were an epic boyband in Japan some 10 years ago, but now they've grown up and become TV presenters. Their TV show is hilarious, but the best bit is when Shingo is put in American situations and has to use English (badly). The other week he had to deal with a customs officer asking him things like "did you pack this bag yourself" and "does your luggage contain any explosive devices".
This is probably why Britain's Next Top Model seems like such quality TV - Louise and I had a vodka party in my apartment to celebrate the final, even if horse-teeth Lianna won. We're hoping that the new season of America's Next Top Model will see us through until Lost3 starts in October.
And you'll be pleased to hear that it has only taken me a year to sign up with my local DVD rental place! A whole new world of movie-goodness is mine all mine. |
